Helpful Hotkeys Prior to home Internet access, if a person needed information on a particular subject they would have to look it up in an encyclopedia if they owned a set. Then there was a good chance the information presented was either outdated or not detailed enough. If that was the case, a time-consuming trip to the nearest library was required. These days, we probably take for granted the speed at which we can look up information. There probably isn’t a subject in existence that can’t be found on the Web. That’s the great and wonderful thing about the Internet. It makes life simpler and easier in a lot of ways. I like simple and easy. That’s why I’m a fan of using hotkeys while surfing the Internet. Hotkeys are simply single or multiple key combinations on your keyboard that can be used to control certain aspects or functions of your computer. There are hotkeys for your operating system and there are hotkeys for specific software. The hotkeys I’ll touch on in this column all apply to the Internet browsers Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome Let’s say you’ve got your browser open and it’s sitting on your homepage. Without touching your mouse, simply press the “Ctrl” button with your left pinky finger and while holding it down, press the “L” button with your right hand. After following those directions, you’ll notice the Internet address (URL) listed within the browser address bar is now highlighted in blue. That highlighting means if you were to just simply type the URL of the new page that you want to go to, it will automatically override whatever is there already. Here are two more tips to make getting to a website even faster. When you type in the URL, don’t worry about typing “www.” in front of the address because the browsers do that automatically now Also, instead of taking your hand off the keyboard to reach over and use your mouse to click on the “Go” button to jump to the new address, simply hit the “Enter” button on your keyboard If you follow these few basic timesaving steps, you’ll be surfing the Internet much more quickly. While you are exercising your new hotkeys ability, you might start utilizing the F11 key as well. Hitting the F11 key allows you to put the browser into “Fullscreen” mode which lets you view more of a web page. Hit it again to go back to normal. There’s even a hotkey combination to quickly return to your homepage and you do that by pressing the “Alt” and “Home” keys together. Did you know you can also scroll up and down on a web page without using your mouse? You can simply use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard To learn more about hotkeys, jump over to your favourite search engine and type “hotkeys” in the search box. You’ll be presented with a lot of useful information on the subject. Learning more about hotkeys will let you search the Internet quickly and get your hands on whatever you’re looking for faster than ever before.
